Safety of Gold in Teeth

Into hip hop fashion? Want to buy gold teeth but can’t decide on the material? Amalgam, silver or gold? Don’t worry, try gold. This is the latest the dentists have to say.

Studies indicate that most of the dentists choose gold for their own dental procedures as they have seen and experienced its durability over the years.

Gold, Your Choice
For over centuries gold has been considered valuable. It has been used as money, as jeweler and in dentistry as well for a long, long time. In some cultures having gold teeth was a status symbol and it showed the wealth of the wearer. Gold was used for filling the cavities as well. As time passed, gold lost the important position it enjoyed once in dentistry. Even people started looking down on the gold teeth mostly, but still some parts in the world do take them as status symbols. The rise in popularity of hip hop fashion has brought along with it a new genre in jewelry design; iced out jewelry. A central tenet of any self respecting connoisseur of bling bling is the gold tooth.

Scientific proof for gold

But now gold is back with a bang due to scientific as well as hip hop jewelry reasons. New research and studies have proved that there is nothing like gold. It has been prove recently that gold, which has been used in restorative dentistry for more than 2,500 years, is still the champion and no other metal can boast of its restorative properties better than the gold. Gold is durable hard metal and it has unusual strength. Hip hop jewelry lovers will be pleased to know that If higher gold content dental restorations are used, they can stay perfectly well for more than 40 years and some studies take that limit to 50 years as well. And this is not all. Solid gold teeth as well as gold fillings have shown remarkable strength against opposing teeth while being in constant use. It has also been proved that gold works really well in the oral environment. It is not only kind to other soft tissues but most importantly it does not react with food acids and is perfectly safe as a filling material. So what do the scientists have to say about the safety of gold in your teeth?

Not a bad picture, really. Although it has been proved that very rarely some people do develop allergies against gold, yet it is not common. Mostly people develop Stomatitis or Lichen Planus. Stomatitis is the mucosal lining inflammation in the mouth and can occur in gums, throat, and cheeks and even on lips. Some times they cause inflammation on the roof or floor of the mouth as well, while Lichen Planus is a disease in the form of rashes or lesions. It can occur in the mucosal lining of the mouth and some times even on the skin. It has been seen that once gold teeth or gold fillings were removed, the patients recovered really well.

So, by going through the advantages and disadvantages of gold in teeth it becomes evident that gold not only is safe to be used in dentistry, but is also the best available option as well, plus it’s got what hip hop fashion lovers want; bling bling!
