It’s worth remembering just how far hip hop has come in the space of less than three decades. The roots of hip hop are to be found in the inner city projects of the USA populated predominantly by African Americans.  Today it’s possible to turn on the TV in any country in any continent and see young bands copying the whole hip hop style, including the clothing.  Although there are certain traits that seem to be ubiquitous when it comes to hip hop clothing, such as baggy pants and iced out jewelry chains, Hip hop itself encompasses within it many sub genres specific to locations and periods in history. The great American rap artist Eazy-E, formerly of the world class wrecking crew in the 1980’s, would probably have great difficulty relating to the overt commercialism of today’s hip hop scene, complete with its range of designer accoutrements.

The baseball cap is an essential part of any urban hip hop outfit whether women or men. The reason for this is not so much to do with the sport of baseball, but rather it is related to showing pride in ones own local area. Most people choose to sport a hip hop baseball cap that has the logo of their local sports team on it. This is known as ‘representing’.  The baseball cap can be worn in many way; either back to front, on the side or straight on. In previous times it was deemed fashionable to curve the sides of the cap peak inwards; however, these days it seems that the flatter your cap, the more your credibility. In addition to standard baseball caps that can be bought at any local sports store, there are specially designed baseball caps that incorporate intricate embroidery of any custom theme the customer may like. Popular themes are national flags such as the Jamaican, Mexican or Puerto Rican flags, all of which represent the ethnic background of the wearer.

As with every other aspect of womens urban hip hop clothing, the main thing to remember with hip hop tops is to wear them baggy and loose. This reflects the attitude of hip hop very well, which is about being relaxed and expressing yourself in a comfortable way.  Although there is no one design or type of t-shirt that can best be characterized as hip hop, there are a couple of tops that should definitely be included in any hip hop wardrobe. There is the famous hooded top, which is a sweater with a hood that can be drawn up over your head as and when you like. It may be possible to say that such tops have a particular appeal to street criminals that do not want to be easily recognized, but the fact is that womens urban hip hop fashion is main stream and hooded tops can be found in most young people’s wardrobes whether they are into hip hop or not. Particular popular amongst hip hop lovers are the basketball jerseys worn by professional basketball players.

Womens urban Hip hop pants are to be worn baggy. There is no one particular style of pants that best embraces the entire hip hop genre, although baggy jeans have been a consistent part of the womens urban hip hop clothing scene for years. Prior to the 1990’s however when hip hop was still underground, people for the most part were restricted to the fashion available at the time and that meant wearing regular fitting jeans. Sneakers; arguably the most important part of a womens urban hip hop outfit. School kids across America have had their lives made miserable for sporting the wrong kinds of sneakers thus leaving themselves open to ridicule. Conversely kids with expensive sneakers have been attacked and robbed of their shoes. Bizarre as it may seem, sneakers are important to hop hop lovers and some enthusiasts will spend thousands of dollars to buy a pair of discontinued sneakers.
